It was not tough for me to spend some dollars and obtain a mixed flock, the chicken coop and other necessary equipment. without much knowledge about the coop care, maintenance and other related issues, i blindly jumped into the trouble myself.. I have not cleaned my coop since march and am just at the end of my bale of shavings. it does not smell! it does not smell! for the run we have an elevated coop and they spend a lot of time under the coop, so i added a few inches of sand. the rest of the run in just bare ground. so far not too bad.. Without proper ventilation year-round, toxic fumes can build up inside the chicken coop. however, the vents should not be placed so that cold air can blow into the coop, either. ceiling vents or small windows on the sides of the coop -- avoiding the north and west sides, if possible -- allows fresh air to pass through the structure, allowing.
